How to Relieve a Headache at Home

Written by A

Nothing ruins a sunny spring day quite like the pounding sensation in your head, the one that makes you pull at your hair trying to relieve it.

As common as it is, with 1 in 5 women being affected and 1 in 15 men, there are many forms of a headache, so it can be tricky to pinpoint why - or more importantly, how to relieve it.

With busy schedules and life getting in the way, here are ways you can relieve a headache at home before coming in to see us.

                          Sinus Headaches

Caused by congestion, inflammation, and pressure build-up in the sinus cavities, this type of headache can be common as we head into spring and summer, the season of bloom.

A massage physically helps drain excess mucus and stimulates circulation.

     Relief:

  • Use a facial steamer or warm compress to loosen things up
  • With the tips of your fingers, press and rub under your cheekbones in a circular motion
  • Continue this from the corner of your nose all the way to your ears

Tension Headaches

Caused by tight contraction of muscles in areas such as the shoulders, neck, and/or jaw due to factors like stress or poor posture.

A massage helps to create movement, loosening up the tightness. It also helps by decreasing the frequency and intensity of tension headaches.

 Relief:

  1. Neck and Shoulders
  • In a comfortable sitting position, squeeze and roll your traps with your hands

2. Scalp Massage

  • Using all ten finger tips, slowly create small circles on your entire scalp - focus on the temples and base of your skull
  • Where the tightness is more prevalent, use firmer pressure on those points

TMJ headaches

Caused by dysfunction and stress in the temporomandibular joint, leading to teeth grinding or jaw clenching. For more information, you can read our previous article on it.

A massage can help loosen the muscles and joints.

Relief:

  • Start by locating your masseter muscle. You can do this by biting down
  • Use your fingertips to create firm circles on the muscle whilst opening your jaw slightly

We hope these simple tips and tricks help improve your days, but seeing one of our highly trained therapists will help with headaches in the long run
