Three Common Issues We Encounter and How Remedial Therapy Can Help You

Written by Alessandro D.S.

A remedial therapist isn’t just a masseuse; we are part detective, part healer. We listen to the body beyond the words clients tell us to uncover where the body is holding stress, pain, or imbalances. With skilled hands and a deep understanding of movement and various tissues, we don’t just treat symptoms; we restore function, flow, and confidence. Every session is tailored, purposeful, and grounded in care, with therapy that is targeted, long-lasting, and empowers real change to help people reconnect with their bodies and function in their day-to-day life with ease and efficiency. In our field of work, our clients face various challenges, but a lot come in with the same sort of issue.

  1. ‘Trapped/tight shoulders and neck.’

Often clients will say, ‘my shoulders feel heavy and pulled up’ or it is ‘uncomfortable/painful to turn my neck’. What is really happening? Clients who are experiencing this often work desk jobs, and these symptoms develop as the muscles are continuously working at a low level, rather than from strain or injury. Over time, reduced blood flow, stiffness in the neck, and a constantly alert nervous system leave the shoulders feeling heavy and tight by mid-afternoon. Remedial treatment helps by reducing unnecessary muscle tension, improving circulation, and restoring movement through the neck and upper back. When these systems settle, the body handles desk-based load more efficiently, leading to shoulders that feel lighter and a neck that doesn’t tighten as the day goes on.

  1. ‘Lower back stiffness/pain.’

Lower back stiffness often stems from long hours of sitting; it usually happens because the spine stays in a slightly bent position for too long. The lower back muscles will tighten, with the hip flexors taking over, leading the body to respond with protective guarding, leaving the lower back feeling jammed and the hips overworked. Remedial therapy helps by restoring movement between the lower back and hips, reducing muscle guarding and tension, and teaching tissues to cope better with sitting. The result is a lower back that feels less stiff and more responsive, allowing you to go through your day without that ‘locked-up’ sensation and reducing the load on your hips.

  1. ‘Shoulder mobility restrictions’

Many people notice their shoulder doesn’t move as easily as it used to, whether it's reaching overhead to grab something from a shelf or reaching behind their back to put on a jacket. This restriction usually happens because the muscles and tissues around the shoulder become tight or imbalanced, often due to other muscles becoming overactive, like the chest or upper traps, while others become underactive, like the rotator cuff. This imbalance pulls the shoulders into a slightly ‘off’ position, which restricts the shoulder. This may lead to joint stiffness and poor posture, restricting the smoothness of movement. Remedial therapy helps by gently restoring mobility in the shoulder joint, releasing tight muscles, improving the way the shoulder moves with the rest of the body, and retraining movement patterns. The result is a shoulder that feels freer, allowing you to reach, lift, and move more comfortably again.

If any of these issues sound familiar, you’re not alone, and more importantly, your body isn’t ‘broken’. These patterns develop gradually through everyday life, work, and stress, and they’re highly responsive to the right kind of care. It isn’t just about easing discomfort in the moment; it’s about helping your body move better, feel lighter, and cope more easily with daily demands.
