We turn the spotlight on our Sports Massage Therapist, Jimmy. Discover how his journey into sports massage therapy began, the common misconceptions about the profession, his favourite ways to relax after a long day, and which athlete he'd love to have dinner with.
Can you tell us about your journey into sports massage therapy? What inspired you to choose this career?
Sports, fitness, health and well-being are a huge part of my life; In my younger years I played at, and was involved with, professional football academies from the age of eight to nineteen. As I have been involved with sport at an elite and high level of performance, I have encountered a wide range of injuries on various parts of my body, from these experiences I have been able to work with a number of physiotherapists and sports therapists, allowing me to learn, understand and participate in programs of rehabilitation and methods of identifying injuries, whilst understanding the frustration and stress injuries and pain can cause. Being able to support clients back to peak fitness and performance as quickly as possible, is something I am really passionate about and I find this extremely rewarding.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job as a sports massage therapist?
The most rewarding part of my job as a sports massage therapist is helping clients recover and enhancing their performance. Seeing clients achieve their goals, whether it’s recovering from an injury, eliminating pain or improving their function and mobility brings me great satisfaction. It is fulfilling to know that the work I do can have a major impact on somebody’s well-being and have a positive contribute to their overall quality of life.
What’s a common misconception people have about sports massage therapy?
I think I misconception about sports massage is it is only for athletes and has to be painful. Sports massage can be helpful and effective for anyone taking part in physical activity from long dog walks at the weekend to recreational gym goers. You don’t have to be an elite athlete to receive a sports massage and it doesn’t always have to be painful! Providing a treatment which is tailored to an individual is always best. Communication before and during the treatment can ensure the treatment is within your comfort level and any adjustment can be made to release them tense muscles. We are trying to ease discomfort, not add to it.
When you're not working, what activities or hobbies do you enjoy?
When I’m not working I enjoy being active and go to gym 4 times a week. I love sport! In particular football. I enjoy playing 5 a side on Monday nights and going to watch Leeds United with my dad and friends. I’m even a sucker for the odd theatre trip to watch a musical but one of my favourite things to do is going to a nice restaurant and having a delicious evening meal with family or friends.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received, either professionally or personally?
That’s a tricky question. One bit of advice that always stands out to me is to embrace failure as a learning opportunity. A setback can teach a valuable lesson and pave the way for growth and resilience. Having this mindset can encourage you to pursue goals without the fear of making mistakes.
If you could have dinner with any athlete (past or present), who would it be and why?
I would love to have dinner with Floyed Mayweather Jr. His unmatched dedication to training, business acumen and ability to maintain an undefeated boxing record are fascinating. I’d love to hear his insights on mental toughness, strategy and what drives him to continuously push his limits.
What’s your favourite way to unwind after a long day of helping others feel better?
My favourite way to unwind after work to putting on some of my favourite music and going to gym. I also love spending time with family and friends. Having a good laugh and connecting with them over an activity or watching some sport helps me relax both physically and mentally so I can disconnect, relax and recharge for the next day.
If you weren't a sports massage therapist, what other career path do you think you might have pursued?
Before I became a sports massage therapist a couple of careers I would have pursued were a PE teacher in a secondary school or a Fire Fighter.
